What happens when I buy a hat sewing pattern?
Please refer to the Customer Service page - most details there! (There's also a few extra details below to explain differences for EU and non - EU customers.)
EU versus Rest of the World - What's the difference?
EU refers to the European Union. Rest of the World is everyone else - that's stitchers from USA, Canada, Australia, NZ, Japan or anywhere that's not part of the EU. My lucky Rest of the World customers get to download their PDF pattern instantly. Unfortunately EU customers must have their pattern manually emailed to them due to EU tax (VAT) laws which means a small delay. I aim to email them just as soon as I see the order but I may be asleep (remember I'm on the other side of the World), out shopping or home stitching in another room. So I'm saying within 24 hours EU customers will have their pattern, often much sooner. In the meantime, please open the eTutorial, which you CAN get instantly because it's free, and start planning your fabulous hat!
Do I have to choose in advance what type of computer or device I’ll be using for the eTutorial?
No, it's free so you can get any and all of them!
You're welcome to choose more than one version of the eTutorial but it's worth thinking about which device you want to use it on and therefore which version is best for you (can I suggest you DON'T try using it on a phone - I think it will be just too tiny). If you subsequently change your mind you can come back to the shop and get a different version (again for free). If you want, you can download the PDF ePatterns on one device and run the flipbook/interactive PDF eTutorial on another. Please also see our Digital Download Policy and Terms.
How do I download my ePattern? I'm NOT in the EU
(i.e. I'm from USA, Canada, Australia, NZ, Japan or anywhere that's not part of the EU)
You will receive an email once you have paid for your ePattern and it will include a link for each purchased/selected item (the email will also include links for any free eTutorials you selected). Each item will download as soon as you click its link. The first page of the ePattern PDF is an intro to the product so it's worth opening to have a look. Don't forget to also download your eTutorials through their separate links. You have 3 attempts to download each of the items and you must download the items within 1 day of purchase, after which the link/s will close. If you have any problems please email me (see Contact) and I'll check what may have happened and, if necessary manually email the item to you. Please also see our Digital Download Policy and Terms.
How do I download/get my ePattern? I'm in the EU
If you're in the EU your ePattern is sent separate to any eTutorials you selected. The ePattern (PDF) will be sent separately via manual email. You should get it within 24 hours, possibly less. The first page of the ePattern is an intro to the product so it's worth opening to have a look. You will receive an email once you have paid for your ePattern confirming your purchase, it will also include a link for each selected eTutorial. Each eTutorial will download as soon as you click its link. You have 3 attempts to download each of the eTutorials and you must download them within 1 day of ordering them, after which the link/s will close. If you have any problems please email me (see Contact) and I'll check what may have happened and, if necessary manually email the item to you. Please also see our Digital Download Policy and Terms.
How do I download the eTutorial? I've bought an ePattern
If you've selected an eTutorial along with an ePattern PDF you will receive an email once you have paid for your ePattern. The email will include a link for each selected eTutorial. Each eTutorial will download as soon as you click its link. You have 3 attempts to download each of the eTutorials and you must do so within 1 day of your purchase, after which the link/s will close. How do I download the eTutorial? I'm not buying an ePattern
It's just like buying it but the price is $0.00. Check the box for the eTutorial you'd like to try, click buy, you'll go through the checkout process but not have to pay anything. You will then receive an email which will include a link for each selected eTutorial. Each eTutorial will download as soon as you click its link. You have 3 attempts to download each of the eTutorials, and must do so within 1 day of placing your order, after which the link will close. Sorry, I'm unable to manually send eTutorials that fail to download if they are selected on their own without a purchased matching ePattern. Please also see our Digital Download Policy and Terms.
How do I print my pattern?
It’s easy! Instructions are included within the eTutorial and you should follow them carefully to make sure your printed pattern is the correct size (i.e. so it doesn’t shrink, enlarge or distort in the printing process).
What size paper do I print the pattern on?
The pattern can be printed on either A4 or US Letter Size paper. If you happen to have access to a large format printer (for example you work in an architect’s office) I can send you large format patterns (A1 or ANSI D) that won’t need joining/assembling. Please email me and I will be happy to oblige!
Can I buy a ready printed paper pattern instead?
Sorry, all my patterns are offered as digital products only. This makes them cheaper to produce (no paper, no packaging), cheaper to deliver to you (no postage) and faster (instant download means no waiting for the post). And you get all the cool interactive features of the flipbook eTutorial as well.
Do I need to scale up the patterns?
NO! They come full size. Simply print, assemble, cut and stitch.
Is there a lot of joining/assembling of the pattern?
No! Since hat pattern pieces are small compared to dress or pants pattern pieces there is not too much assembling at all. I’ve set out the pattern pieces to ensure there are as few joins as possible so you’ll be sewing faster than you think. And I do supply instructions. Don’t forget, one of the big advantages of a digital pattern is that you can print it as many times as you like and don’t have to worry about keeping your pattern in tip top condition ready for the next time you want to use it. And if you happen to have access to a large format printer I can send you large format patterns that won’t need joining/assembling. Please email me and I will be happy to oblige!
Can I buy one of your hats readymade?
My job is to make patterns that you can use to make your own wonderful hat. Sadly my hats are not available for purchase.
Do you run workshops?
I hope you find my interactive eTutorials a virtual workshop. My goal is to supply you with the knowhow you need to be able to stitch away and get your hat made and on the street!
I’m new to sewing – will I be able to make a hat?
Of course you will! Firstly I have graded my patterns from easy to challenging (see ePattern Challenge levels). Choose one of the easy one fish patterns. The instructions are detailed and the videos are like a workshop so you’ll be well supported. On top of that, there’s lots of helpful hints and a glossary to explain sewing terms and products so you’ll never feel alone.
I’m an experienced stitcher – do I need all the extras?
You won’t be overwhelmed with excess info you don’t need ‘cause a lot of it is optional. Open the video only if you need extra help. Click the pop out box only if you’re curious.
How much fabric will I need?
You might have noticed I haven’t put fabric quantities in the pattern description. It’s because there are so many different ways you can design your own unique hat that fabric choices are almost endless; same fabric all over, different fabric for each piece, or a range of somethings in between. But as a very rough guide most hats can be made using less than 1.5 m /60 in. of fabric (115 cm / 45 in. wide), and some substantially less. Within the eTutorial you’ll get fabric quantities for each view (using the same fabric for all visible parts of the hat) plus help on how to calculate quantities for your own unique hat.
Apart from fabric and thread, what will I need to make a hat?
Obviously, paper to print and a machine to sew with. On top of that, stiffener (interfacing) for the brim, a fusible product like Wonder Under or Vlieosfix, something to finish the edge of the Brim like bias binding or rattail cord and possibly additional interfacing if you want to stiffen your Hat Crown. All details are provided in the pattern.
What is Wonder Under and Vliesofix?
They are both examples of fusible products used to fuse one fabric to another. It’s a bit like the fusible backing on many interfacings. They come on the roll and you get them both from shops that sell fabric. They’re easy to use and I explain all within the eTutorials.
What is interfacing?
Interfacing is a product used to stabilise and/or stiffen a fabric and it comes in a variety of weights (i.e. degree of stiffness). In the olden days interfacings were all sewn in but now they are usually iron on (i.e. they have a fusible backing). Interfacing is used for the hat brim – you can choose a light weight one to make a floppy brim or a very firm one to make a stiff brim. In my patterns I refer to the interfacing used for the Brim as stiffener. Interfacing comes on the roll from fabric shops.
Do you have a Glossary?
Yes, at the back of the flipbook eTutorials you’ll find a comprehensive sewing glossary.
Do I need to overlock/serge my seams?
Since none of the hat seams experience wear and tear, and they are all hidden due to the lining, overlocking/serging is not necessary. Your hat gets done faster!
Can I sell the hats I’ve made using your patterns?
My patterns are made for you to make as many hats as you like for yourself or as gifts. If you would like to sell hats made using my patterns please contact me for a licence (see next FAQ).
Licence to sell the hats I’ve made using your patterns
A licence to sell hats made using a FishPetals Do Fly pattern in your own micro business (e.g. at markets, in a small retail store) is AUD$65 per pattern. If you plan to make & sell very large quantities of hats I am happy to negotiate a licence fee. Please contact me in either case.
Can I teach a class using one of your patterns?
Yes, if each student has purchased the pattern themselves and downloaded it to their own computer or device.
Is your payment gateway secure?
YES! Your payment is handled by Stripe, a fully fledged and secure payment gateway. None of your financial details are seen or stored by me at all.
VAT (Value Added Tax)
This is a tax applicable in the EU only. EU customers are not liable to pay it in my store since I'm sending your PDFs manually. If I sent them automatically you would have to pay it and to do so would be incredibly difficult for me since I'm a micro business. So, by sending them manually, I'm saving you money and me angst.
GST (Goods & Services Tax)
This is a tax applicable in Australia only. Whilst I'm a micro business I do NOT need to charge GST to Australian customers. So, for the time being, your pattern is GST free, whether you're Australian or not!
FishPetals Do Fly patterns are sold in Australian dollars (which means they'll be quite cheap if you're using USD, GBP, the Euro, or many other currencies). The currency converter on the website is an indication of the equivalent price in your own currency. The actual price you pay is determined in the payment gateway and based on the exchange rate at the time and the card you're using.
